Website Ranking Key Words Things to Think About Before You Start Designing

I designed a website once for streaming audio, this was the key word I was to use streaming website audio, this sounds like a good key word phrase!

When it got onto Google it made number one, wow I thought I should get lots of hits with this? I got a grand total of 0 hits, why do you think that was?

It’s all to do with supply and demand only around 135 people typed these key words in and the demand is around 620000 websites doing the same thing.

When you pick your key words there needs to be a good demand for those key words.

You can get lots of software that will look this up for you.

Spend time looking up key words that work else like me you can have a very good website all keyed for these words and get 0 hits.

I started to think it was the design of the site, words like “FREE page ranking” would seem to be a good key phrase but the demand is 0 for this, humm this sounds a good phrase and so did 1650000 other website designers, so because I have looked up the phrase I now no not to spend hours designing a web page for this phrase.

Your website needs to be relevant to the phrase your using, If I type into Google “Website promotion” I expect to get sites for website Promotion, not a cook book!

This is why Google do what they do, they spider your web pages and the key words are taken these are from bits like the page title tags links hyper links, even the text that comes up when you hover over a picture.

Google also look to see the number of good links that point to your website, think about putting your url in your signature in any forum you have joined.

Key words need to be common and there needs to be a demand get Nichefinder or some other software to look up this information, it will save you months of time and work.

Flash, SEO and Optimization - How to properly use flash on your websites

Flash movies can be a great thing. They can help catch eyes that are otherwise bored with static looking pages, and they can help tell a story better than plain text. However the use of flash must be tempered with the ability to rank in search engines. This article describes some of the considerations and recommendations when using flash on a website.

Disney does it. And so does Oprah. Even my favorite pizza place does it. That is embed their primary navigation and important content inside a flash movie. In fact in all these cases, a good part of the sites home page is flash, rendering that section of the page invisible to search engine crawlers.

Granted these are extreme cases of sites which use flash extensively, but there are other cases where even a little flash can be improperly used. There are also cases where flash is not only appropriate, it is recommended. The question then becomes how to best use flash without affecting search engine rankings.

Much like the early settlers of the Wild Wild West we are the frontiersman (and women) of a new community – the World Wide Web community (notice the WWW analogy) – which has seen its birth in the past couple decades and has really experienced its growth happen in the last 10 years or so.

And throughout that time there have been many ways to display a website and its content. Some were more successful than others. But there is one aspect of web development which has been hotly contested between designers of websites and those who position them. That is the use of Flash.

Flash has been around for some time now and while it is pretty (for lack of a better word) it can seriously hinder a websites ability to position well in the search engines. This is because most search crawlers can not see nor effectively index flash or its contents. Therefore anything contained within the flash, including page content or more importantly site navigation, is invisible to them.

Yet flash does have it’s good points as well. As I mentioned above, it can turn an otherwise bland looking site into something unique and refreshing. So the question becomes – where does one balance the need for search engine indexability with the need for impressing customers?

Well here’s a rule of thumb for you – less is better.

Less flash occupying the page is better, as well as having as little content embedded within it as possible. Further, where the flash appears on the page can have an impact on its ability to deliver the intended message.

Let’s have a quick survey – how many of you, upon coming to a site, tune out the top 1/5 of the page, and even a couple inches on the right of the page – especially if you see flashing or movement?

Just as I suspected, most of you. I do it too. And we do this because these are the places we typically see banner ads, therefore we associate that space on many sites with advertising and tune it out.

But there are cases when sites place important messages, via flash, in these locations. But if many people tune out these locations, they are also tuning out that important message. Hence the reason the flash doesn’t do so well on the page.

So there’s tip number one: Don’t place your flash where it will be ignored – namely those spots on the page normally associated with advertising.

My second flash tip – don’ t take up most of the screen with it. Keep the screen real estate it occupies to less than ½ the screen, preferably on the left side. There are many reasons for this:

Too often, as people are orienting themselves to the page, their eyes scan the page and are all over it for a few seconds, and then fixate on the top left of the page. If you have a flash movie running (and especially if its one without controls) they have missed a few seconds of that message. And we all know what good a message is that’s incomplete?

Another reason for minimizing flash usage: While more and more people are adopting broadband every day, still close to half of the US uses dial up. Which means everything takes longer to load. And if these users are waiting for a flash movie to load, they could navigate away from your site in frustration because the page is taking so long to load.

Some other recommendations:

Don’t use the flash to tell the story, use it to enhance the story. If you are trying to sell a product, leave the important information in the HTML of the page, but use the flash to emphasize the product by either displaying it, or pointing out the benefits. your flash should be complementary and not too overwhelming.

Finally, did you know you can also externalize the code required to display the flash? This is something that can help improve page load times which could improve spiderability.

Using a technique similar to one I described in the externalizing JavaScript article, you can externalize the code used to render the flash. You can use the same code used to create a drop down box via JavaScript to externalize the flash code (using the document.write code and embedding the HTML needed to display the flash there).

As you can see, based on this article, is that flash isn’t all that bad, provided its used properly. That means it shouldn’t be too overpowering or occupy too much of the page. It should be complementary to the message the page is intending to give, and should be located in places that people will look at, and not in places normally associated with advertising.

If you follow these simple rules, your flash can become an essential selling point to your site. One which could provide your customers the little push they need to move from browsers to buyers.

Submit All Of Your Pages And Watch Your Traffic Grow

Free link exchanges got my website to the first page on

Google searches for my most important keyword phrase and

free link exchanges can do the same for your website’s most

important keyword phrases.

A while back my website, www.BarrysBeanies.com, was ranked

number 33 on Google search results for one of my most

important keyword phrases, “Beanie Babies.” I was determined

to get my website to the first page of Google search results

for this keyword phrase.

From what I had read about search engine optimization I knew

one of the most important things I could do to get my web

pages ranked higher on Google was to do link exchanges with

other websites. There would be no cost involved other than

my time to do these link exchanges.

So I started doing free link exchanges with other websites

that had the same theme as my website. I could target any

keyword phrase that I wanted to in order to improve my

ranking for it on Google search results page.

I made sure that the title text link I exchanged with other

websites targeted my most important keyword, “Beanie

Babies.” The title text link is also referred to as the

“anchor text.”

If I wanted to target the keyword phrase “Beanie Babies,” I

would make my title text link (anchor text) “Beanie Babies.”

This title link text would be a hyperlink and the URL would

be the keyword phrase I wanted to target.

What I like about free link exchanges is that I can target

one web page for different keyword phrases. So once I get a

high ranking for one of my important keyword phrases, I can

then choose another keyword phrase to target, and use this

new keyword phrase in the title text link (anchor text) that

I now exchange with other websites.

It is also important to try and do your free link exchanges

with web pages that have a high Google Page Rank (PR). Try

to get link exchanges with web pages that have a PR3 or

higher.

Web pages that have a high Page Rank (PR) are viewed by

Google as being more important and links to your website

from these high PR web pages will help your website more

than doing link exchanges with a web page with a PR1 or PR2.

However, all link exchanges will help your website

regardless of what the other web page’s Page Rank (PR) is.

It’s just that high PR web pages will help your website

more, especially if there is not many other links on your

partner’s web page that has your link. So having your link

on a PR3 web page with five other links is better than

having your link on a PR3 web page with 20 other links.

How do you tell a web page’s Page Rank (PR)? You can

download the free Google Toolbar at

http://toolbar.google.com/, which will display the Page Rank

(PR) of web pages on Google search results for any keyword

phrase you enter into the Google search box.

Also, if you check the Google directory at

http://directory.google.com/ and locate the category or

theme of the websites you want to target, they will be

listed with the highest Page Rank (PR) websites at the top

of the list. Most of the sites near the top of the list will

be PR4, PR5 or higher. These are the websites that you want

to do your free link exchanges with.

Do free link exchanges work?

Well, as I stated above, my website, BarrysBeanies.com, was
ranked number 33 for “Beanie Babies.” After I did about 50
link exchanges with other websites my rank on Google for
“Beanie Babies” reached number two in the search results.

So free link exchanges work!

Search engine ranking is one of the most important parts to
your overall Internet success if you have a website. In
fact, it may be the most important thing you can learn how
to do in order to have a successful Internet business.

A Naive Mistake Cost Me My Google Rankings

Little do you know but you too could be making mistakes with your website that are costing you your

search engine rankings.

Goggle and the other search engines are constantly changing their algorithms to keep pace of search

engine spammers. Some novice website owners may be like me and be making big mistakes in the eyes of the search engine bots which will lower their search engine ranking or blot their website right out of existence from everyone except those people that have been given their website URL.

Let me tell you my mistakes and what I’ve learned from them… In 2000, I started a small research vineyard. Soon I wanted a website to tell people about it, advise others how to grow grapes, and get my research information out to the public.

I was on a shoe-string budge so I learned HTML myself. My website was quickly posted to one of those “free” website hosts. Two months later, my website was hitting the top “5″ in the search engine rankings for all of my keywords. I had lots of relevant content which made this possible. I was in heaven!

I soon realized that the free web host didn’t provide all that a webmaster wants (cgi-bin, commerce, etc). I found a better host provider at a reasonable price and I moved my website.

Big Mistake #1: I didn’t remove the pages from the free website host. I figured with time, that host would see no activity and just drop me from their server to make more room for other websites. Little did I know how long that free website would persist on the Internet.

Big Mistake #2: This one is much like the first one, just done in a different manner. After three years, I got tired of my website’s appearance. I had learned CSS and wanted to make my website more uniform and professional looking. Slowly, I began transitioning my pages to the new look. Since the search engines knew the old pages, I simply left them on the backend of my website, while naming the new pages differently and more google friendly. Little did I know at the time the search engines would spider both the new and the old pages now.

I really didn’t know that I was doing anything wrong. When I checked my search engine rankings, I still ranked very high. I should have paid more attention and noticed that sometimes it was the new pages that ranked up there but often it was the old pages. They had been there all along and still commanded those high search engine rankings. Once in a while I even saw some of the old pages from the free web host days.

I guess I was only concerned about my search engine rankings, not which pages, new or old were being indexed. After all, as long as my site was getting noticed, And traffic was coming to my website so why care?

Big Mistake #3: I wanted to put up more relative content in the form of articles related to growing grapes and win on my website. I though this would help my search engine rankings for some keywords I was low in and also help my website visitors.

I purchased a program named “Article Equalizer” to make this task easier on myself. Being a new user of this program, I began to use this software with the templates that came with the program. It seemed to work well and produced the results I wanted.

Little did I know that by using the built-in templates that came with this software, a “finger print” would be placed in the resulting pages that would identify that I used this program to generate the index to the article and the article pages themselves.

Mistake #4: To aggravate the above mistake, I loaded the index page to the back end of my website. This index page was a collection of hyperlinks, no content, just links.

Goggle drastically changed its algorithm early in the year 2005. The unthinkable happened. Not only did my search engine rankings drop, they disappeared altogether. I wasn’t even in Google. Google had treated me as a search engine spammer! I had lost my top rankings and now wasn’t even indexed.

I had violated Googles new rules. I learn a lot from my mistakes. What rules did I violate? First, I had multiple pages of the same content all over the web and my own website. Google says, “Don’t create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with substantially duplicate content.” Boy, had I done that. And without even knowing it. I had links up on the search engines that lead to multiple pages on my own site and to my old free one.

I had created pages that had multiple links that lead back to my main page through my article directory index. I know it looked like I was spamming Google but it was just a naive mistake, compounded through the software that was going to save me time.

Naive mistakes can cost you everything when you’re running up against google. My laziness cost me. I didn’t erase what I had created before and had used a program to save me some time.

I’ve remedied my mistakes but am yet to be found in Google. They are unforgiving in that respect but I believe that I will soon be back in their good graces. Learn from my mistakes and don’t make them. If you have disappeared from Google, you might want to check and see if you too have made some naive mistakes like I did. Change your website to conform to Google’s guidelines and then re-submit your site. If that doesn’t work. You’ll have to start all over with a new domain name. And that can be a painful waste of time.
